What this song is all about

Mala (Necklace) Giraviye (a female parrot) or the ring neck parrot. That is the meaning of the song title. Though, the song has nothing to do with parrot, direct translation gives flying with this female parrot to his village. In poetry, female parrot relates to one's girlfriend/wife, just to beautify the expressions. Talking about birds, I played a song the other day in my car. If you are a Sinhalese, you probably know this song. It is called "Pretty Foxy Hen" by Luke Henrickson. My daughter now six yrs old asked me why he sings about chicken. I could not stop laughing and I said it is a very pretty chicken.
Back to this song, this is a love song which depicts the hardship of life and desires. So he wants to take his girlfriend or fiance to his village where he grew up, to share his lively hood, his memories from his child hood. He tells her, when he goes there with her, all his relatives, even the distant ones would gather in front of his house to welcome her. They probably touch your necklace to see whether it is a real gold necklace. They may ask you whom you borrowed the silk dresses? because they know I am poor.
Upon hardship of life you may question why life is so cruel? Why it is so hard and may shed a tear on my shoulder. So princess lets wait a while.....
